Involvement of Peer Educators in the prevention of STI and HIV/AIDS
To bring community involvement and to educate on STI and HIV/AIDS to the truckers by the trained trucking community is one of the integrated core component of this project. Peer educators’ are the persons who are associated with the trucking allied industries in Namakkal District who have been so supportive to our project activities under the Truckers Town Intervention Program. Their selection to the project is based on the good communication skills, eager to work for the social cause, leadership skills and knowledge in STI and HIV/AIDS. |

They have been trained by WORD in all the elements of the STI/HIV/AIDS components in six modules developed by APAC, Chennai. They have been involved in the project activities. They do all the project activities to educate the fellow truckers and cleaners in their respective working areas .
Right from the beginning of the project, WORD have been organized them as an association in which all the peer educators were actively involved. This annual convention is held to recognize the best work the peer educators do at the field level, to learn and share the best practices from each other, to plan for the future and to discuss how to strengthen their future course of action.
V district level peer educators' conventions held in Namakkal district convened by WORD NGO. The details are as follows.

The district level peer educators also participated in the state level co-ordination meetings and conventions organised by APAC and other partner NGOs.
WORD also helped the peer educators association to get registered under trust act and had given Rs 10000 as a seed money during the V peer educators' convention to carry out the STI and HIV/AIDS prevention activities in Namakkal to the truckers and helpers. The involvement of peer educators were praised by the Namakkal Taluk Lorry Owners Association. << back |
